Behold… New Generation Science!

This year’s ASPAC Conference only just concluded at Science Centre Singapore on Saturday last week (for the uninitiated, I’ll allude to what the conference was about at the end of this write-up, so don’t worry).  One of the sub-themes of the conference was ‘New Generation Science’. And while this was discussed largely around the new generation of visitors, science centres and technologies, I felt… Continue reading »

Hippo Aggression!

The topic and timing of this contribution is probably a little odd, particularly since it’s on the eve of New Year’s Eve, but maybe the fierce nature of this topic suits the lead-up to the year ahead as we usher in the Year of the Dragon!     Moving right along, I’ve made it a religious… Continue reading »

Dragonflies of our Parks and Gardens

I found myself grinning when I was handed a copy of Dragonflies of our Parks and Gardens for the express purpose of writing a book review. What was not to like about it? It felt sleek even at 110 pages and the lush green covers exuded a cool, soothing feel. And if that weren’t enough,… Continue reading »

Lock on Target | Homing Instinct of Snails

Many moons ago, when I was just a little rugrat, I accompanied mum and dad to a local shopping centre—Plaza Singapura. Thanks to my kiddie instincts, I soon found myself astray and hopelessly lost. It wasn’t until I cried my way to the information counter, and had the empathetic duty staff announce my name on… Continue reading »

Somebody call Pest Control!

Anything even vaguely ‘Australian’ generally grabs my attention for good cause although honestly, there are occasions when I wish I was less attentive. One such occasion was on Monday evening, when I’d logged off from work at the Science Centre and had made my way home to have dinner. As I was tucking into dinner,… Continue reading »

Social Media for Science | A surefire success or just another online slush pile?

Some people absolutely love coffee and just can’t seem to get enough of it; while others, if ‘forced’ to meet at a Coffee House, would likely order anything but coffee. Interestingly, social media shares a similar parallel in its consumption by advocates and dissidents alike. What I find intriguing, is that at least in the… Continue reading »

~Seismic Feelers!~

Do you reckon that animals have a sixth sense? Well some zoologists certainly seem to think so. They believe that certain animal species have an innate ability to sense subsonic waves from an earthquake or tsunami. There are claims about animals displaying erratic behaviour and moving to higher ground in the face of impending danger.… Continue reading »

An Unquenchable Force | Tsunamis

While writing this article, my father sent me a chilling text message saying a 9.0-magnitude earthquake (according to the US Geological Survey) had just hit the Pacific Ocean near Northeastern Japan on March 11. Tsunami alerts were promptly sounded in 50 countries from Alaska to South America. However, nothing could adequately brace the people of… Continue reading »

A Torrent from Hell

Tokyo will probably not forget 1923 in a hurry. The Hifukusho-Ato region of Tokyo was shaken to its foundation by a violent Great Kanto earthquake which ignited a large firestorm and produced a mammoth fire tornado that killed 38,000 people in just 15 minutes. That deadly statistic clearly casts no doubt on how dangerous fire… Continue reading »

My two cents worth | Book review

Invent: It’s in You Published by Science Centre Singapore ISBN 978-981-08-6519-1 Unedited publications authored by engineers and scientists usually leave me cringing as I painstakingly pore over the content. But not this one! Written by an engineer, scientist and inventor, this delightful read gets a thumbs-up from me. It’s a no-frills book that doesn’t try… Continue reading »
