Xin Nian Kuai Le! Happy Chinese New Year!
by Gauri and Danny
As promised, here’s the second of our 3-part special on fun things you can do this Chinese New Year with those extra oranges you receive during this festive time…
Popping a balloon without touching it
Thought popping a balloon without touching it was impossible? Find out how to do so with the help of oranges!
- Orange peels
- A water balloon
*Make sure the balloon is not vulcanized (a process which makes it stronger) if not it would not pop. Water balloons should work better!
- Inflate the water balloon
*Try to blow the balloon up big so the rubber or latex is stretched out and weak
- Squeeze the juice from the orange peel onto the balloon.
* Note that it is the juice (limonene oil) from the orange peel that we are trying to squeeze out. It is not the juice from the orange pulp!
The balloon will pop!
How does this work?
The reason for this is that the orange peel contains an acid called limonene. This acid will break down the latex of the balloon causing it to pop!
